Update SKYCITY Auckland

As New Zealand gets ready to welcome the world for Rugby World Cup, SKYCITY is right in the centre of the action with an exciting array of new bars and restaurants about to open.  As well as the over 20 bars and restaurants already on site, SKYCITY is aligning itself with some of the biggest names in hospitality to launch three new restaurants and five more bars to ensure the complex is the place to be in the coming months for locals and visitors looking for a great time out!

New to SKYCITY’s Federal Street in August will be Depot, the latest venture by renowned Kiwi Chef Al Brown. Depot, bringing seasonal produce served in a straightforward style will be a popular place to drop in and refuel, with small plates and oysters shucked to order and a menu that features some of New Zealand’s finest local produce.

Also set to open in August is Red Hummingbird.  Based on the concept of a gastro pub - all the sophistication of a bar plus the familiarity of a cosmopolitan club and the ease of a local - the latest offering from Auckland’s hospitality stalwart, Luke Dallow, is sure to quickly become Auckland’s hottest new night-spot.

Following hot on the heels will also be the much anticipated opening of The Grill by Sean Connolly.  In his glamorous Andrew Lister designed restaurant, Sean will serve simple, uncomplicated food including pasture fed meat and sustainable seafood from New Zealand’s very best producers.  Unfolding under the spotlight of TV3’s “Under the Grill” programme, Sean will open his restaurant just in time for the World Cup.

Alongside the much loved dine by Peter Gordon and his Spanish tapas bar Bellota, plus the elegant Lobby bar, which is part of the SKYCITY Grand Hotel, these three new outlets will ensure that Federal Street will quickly become a vibrant entertainment precinct in the heart of all the city action.

From 9 September, The Nation’s Clubrooms will open to guests wanting a true sports bar experience with big screen and live entertainment. By partnering with Steinlager, SKYCITY will help put the All Blacks on show in a great space by serving up live sports coverage and offering a cold Steinlager Classic in a black bottle, brought out to celebrate Steinlager’s 25 year sponsorship of the All Blacks. The Nation’s Clubrooms will be located on Level 3, adjacent to the SKYCITY Theatre.

In an all-new concept, The Twelve Bar has been specially created by SKYCITY with The Family of Twelve, a gathering of some of New Zealand’s best wineries. The Family’s wines will be offered exclusively, on a unique wine list, highlighting the full breadth and depth of varieties and New Zealand wine regions, right in the heart of SKYCITY. Three wines from each winemaker will be available, along with a selection of fine food items, making it the perfect New Zealand wine experience. The Twelve Bar will open on 1 September 2011 on the ground level of SKYCITY, adjacent to the ever-popular Rebo.

‘Chivas at the Deck’ on level two of the main SKYCITY complex will be another great place to be from late August, as the existing Deck bar is transformed into a sophisticated destination in partnership with Chivas Regal - one of the world’s top selling premium scotch whiskies. Chivas at the Deck will be serving Chivas Regal Whisky as well as innovative cocktails and premium spirits accompanied by live entertainment, making it the perfect relax and unwind destination.

182 meters up the SKY Tower luxury will await - as SKYCITY presents in partnership with G.H. Mumm, the prestigious ‘Champagne Mumm at Sky Lounge’.  The Champagne house that best embodies the true culture of Champagne, G.H. Mumm will be sipped (including a selection of Champagne exclusive to the location!) while enjoying the 360 degrees views over Auckland.

Right in the heart of the Casino, Fortuna, a much loved favourite, will reopen in a new location.  Continuing to offer great value buffet dining with a focus on fresh, seasonal produce, extensive seafood, roast meats, salads and desserts,  Fortuna will now also feature a show cooking kitchen, a great new look and an atmosphere that is sure to impress.  Fortuna will again be serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week from mid-August.

Down at the base of the Sky Tower, SKYCITY and Weta Workshop are pleased to be joining together to put the best of this country’s creativity on show in Auckland’s favourite tourist attraction. Opening on 22 August for three months, Weta Workshop and SKYCITY will operate what will be known as the ‘Weta Cave Shop’ within the existing Sky Tower Gift Shop at the base of the Sky Tower.  The exclusive arrangement will see Sky Tower as the only Weta retail outlet in Auckland. One hundred meters of space will be overflowing with merchandise and treats from the Weta stable including The Lord of the Rings collectables.

As well as fantastic dining options, SKYCITY is the home of the highest observation point in the country, the Sky Tower. Action is 24/ 7 at the world class casino and other great fun and entertainment to be had all over the SKYCITY site.

Hayman Island Re-opens

After five months of rebuilding from the devastation of two cyclones, Hayman Island has reopened for business.

The renovation has touched almost every aspect of the Great Barrier Reef resort, starting with a 16-hectare garden landscape created by horticulturalist and TV star Jamie Durie.

The centrepiece is a new botanical garden featuring 33,000 new plants and 327 new species.

The island’s managing director, Lloyd Donaldson, says the landscaping alone has cost around $4 million.

“All of the buildings have been repainted, the new beach villas have been completed, all of the sandstone has been rejuvenated, we’ve upgraded all our lagoon rooms, our penthouse and the majority of our guest rooms have been refurbished, and pretty much every item on the island has been touched.

“It’s as close to a complete renovation as possible.”

Mr Donaldson said it’s by far the most extensive work undertaken since Sir Peter Abeles redeveloped the island in 1986, when it was closed for two years.

Sir Richard Bransonʼs exclusive Noosa home opens its doors

Care to retreat from the world to a heart shaped island?

Makepeace Island, Sir Richard Bransonʼs exclusive home at world renowned Noosa on Australiaʼs Sunshine Coast, has quietly opened its doors for private lease and launched its first web site http://www.makepeaceisland.com.

Located minutes downstream from Noosa Headsʼ bustling dining and shopping precinct, the 25 acre authentic Balinese built property offers luxurious accommodation for up to 22 guests.

Designed for privacy, and sensitively developed in keeping with its unique coastal habitat, the secluded property was completed in 2009 on a heart shaped island in the expansive Noosa River. To date ʻMakepeaceʼ has remained a private retreat for family and friends of the owners Sir Richard Branson and Brett Godfrey, founders of Virgin Blue (now Virgin Australia).

In Australia on a brief visit to Noosa, his “favourite place in Australia”, Sir Richard announced Makepeace Island would occasionally be offered to other guests. The British entrepreneur also launched http://www.makepeaceisland.com, the islandʼs new web site providing a sneak peak of Makepeace magic beyond the propertyʼs previously closed Balinese doors.

“When neither Brett nor myself are visiting Makepeace, we will make the island and its facilities available for others to enjoy the tranquility of what is a very special place,” he said.

Makepeace Island comes complete with its own riverboat to transfer guests, as well as a full sized tennis court and pavillion, spa facilities, theatre, a substantial two-storey open aired Balinese wantilan for relaxing or gathering of friends and family, 500,000 litre lagoon pool, office facilities and an expansive indoor bar designed for entertaining on a grand scale. Gardens and indoor decor include giant sculptures, teak, granite and stone finishes, volcanic boulder bathtubs, ornamental lighting and antiquities and furniture commissioned and acquired in Bali, Java and elsewhere throughout Indonesia.

Makepeace Islandʼs new website goes live from today. The island will be offered on an exclusive, whole of island basis.

Tasmanian Entrepreneur to Circumnavigate Australia for Polio Cause

25 MAY 2011 – On Tuesday, 31 May 2011, Tasmanian entrepreneur Robert Pennicott will be departing for an epic journey entitled “Follow the Yellow Boat Road”, when he circumnavigates Australia in a 5.4m inflatable yellow dinghy to raise funds for Polio eradication.

His aim is to raise the additional $39 million needed by Rotary International to hit the $200 million benchmark, to which Bill Gates has pledged to contribute $355 million more. The grand total of $555 million is anticipated to lead to the total worldwide eradication of polio, with a donation of just $10 vaccinating 17 children.
A passionate mariner and conservationist, Robert, who is also the founder of award-winning, Tasmanian eco-cruise business Pennicott Wilderness Journeys, was keen to commit his skills to the worthy cause. Funds will be raised via an online auction of up to four coveted seats on each leg of the voyage. Online donations will also be accepted at http://www.followtheyellowboatroad.com. “Follow the Yellow Boat Road” will be one of the biggest fundraising efforts ever undertaken in Australia.

“In my lifetime, I hope to make a substantial difference to the world,” Robert said. “I have dreams to give away a lot more money than what I do now, so I have come up with an idea that will make me the catalyst to hopefully raising many millions of dollars.”
“Follow the Yellow Boat Road” will see Robert circumnavigate Australia in an anti-clockwise direction from Sydney to Sydney, on a voyage that is expected to take approximately 75 days and cover 12,000 nautical miles. Accompanying him on an identical 5.4m Naiad rib vessel will be Mike Souter, the Pennicott Wilderness Journeys Operations Manager, who is equally as skilled and inspired for the journey. Two seats per boat will be auctioned via the website http://www.followtheyellowboatroad.com to the highest bidder on 48 of the expeditions 77 segments, with all funds raised going towards the cause. 92 per cent of the funds will be donated to Rotary International’s Polio Plus campaign, and 8 per cent will be donated to the Pennicott Foundation, which will undertake island and coastal restoration projects in Australia and around the world.

The Pennicott Wilderness Journeys was instrumental in eradicating the population of feral cats on Tasman Island that were responsible for killing over 50,000 seabirds per year. The itinerary has been planned to allow time for the passengers on each of the 48 segments to explore the impressive scenery and spectacular wildlife along the Australian coastline. Robert expects to encounter several whale varieties, dolphins, seals, sharks, crocodiles, dugongs, hundreds of sea birds and spectacular caves, blowholes, sea cliffs, varying geology and dramatic rock formations. He also intends to voyage into very remote areas, including a day dedicated to exploring the ‘Head of the Bight’ where approximately 100 Southern Right Whales and their calves gather – an
occurrence rarely seen from the water given its distance from any boat access point. Robert and Mick, with over 70 years experience on the water, will provide an exclusive, unforgettable, money can’t- buy experience for their passengers.

For more information on Follow the Yellow Boat Road including donations, sponsorship opportunities and the full itinerary, visit http://www.followtheyellowboatroad.com.

Robert Pennicott
Robert started his first business as a fisherman in the pristine waters of southern Tasmania, before creating Bruny Island Cruises in 1999 out of a desire to show people the rugged beauty of the Bruny Island coast. His passion and enthusiasm for the business has seen it evolve into a world-class ecotourism experience, which has won numerous awards and accolades for his conservation and sustainability efforts, and business excellence.  In May 2011, Robert launched his own foundation, the Pennicott Foundation, which allows his business to directly contribute to its own nature conservation projects.

Operated by a Boeing 747 aircraft, QF7 departed Sydney Airport at 1325 local time today, and is scheduled to arrive at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport at 1350 local time, also today.

The first inbound service, QF8, will depart DFW at 2200 local time, arriving in Brisbane at 0500 on 18 May and flying onwards to Sydney, landing at 0805. Flying time from Sydney to DFW is 15 hours 25 minutes, and flying time from DFW to Brisbane is 16 hours.

DFW is Qantas’ first new international destination since Buenos Aires in 2008. The service will initially operate four times per week, with a view to increasing the frequency in future. Through its codeshare partnership with American Airlines, Qantas will offer services beyond DFW to 54 destinations in the United States, Canada and Mexico - including Chicago, Las Vegas, Miami, New Orleans, New York, Washington, Toronto, Vancouver, Cancun and Mexico City.

Qantas Chief Executive Officer, Mr Alan Joyce, said Qantas was delighted to be providing the first direct connection between Australia and Texas.

“This new service takes Qantas customers into the heart of the United States, with a wide range of options for onward travel,” Mr Joyce said.

“Dallas and Fort Worth are attractive destinations in their own right, combining rapid economic growth with Texas’ rich heritage.

“However, what sets DFW apart are the connections its world-class airport provides to other major cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico. This makes it the perfect platform for Qantas to develop its relationship with our oneworld™ partner American Airlines, beginning with a significant expansion of codesharing to capitalize on DFW’s hub location.

“There is also great potential to develop inbound tourism to Australia, particularly in Queensland and NSW.

“The launch of a new route is always an exciting occasion and we couldn’t be more pleased to be touching down in DFW today.”

Tourism Australia Managing Director Andrew McEvoy welcomed the new services as an opportunity to further grow tourism to Australia from the US.

“The US is a key market for Australian tourism, delivering close to half a million visitors each year and around $2.1 billion in expenditure,” Mr McEvoy said.

“Tourism Australia’s goal is to grow overnight expenditure of US travelers to as much as $5.5 billion by 2020 - more than double what it is now - and the new Qantas services will help us in achieving this potential.”

Auckland Tornado

On Tuesday 3rd May at approximately 14:55, a Tornado touched down in Auckland’s North Shore - specifically the suburban area of Albany.

The Tornado touched down close to Albany ‘Mega Centre’ mall, before moving through a large part of the mall itself. Much of the roof was taken off by the Tornado, also causing widespread damage in the immediate vicinity to cars, commercial property and up-rooting trees.
The Auckland Council emergency coordination centre has been activated in the wake of the tornado which proceeded to move through suburbs including Glenfield, Birkenhead and Point Chevalier causing some damage to residential homes.

The touch down area and major damage caused was localized in Albany on Auckland’s North Shore. The area is predominantly residential and local retail, an area not frequented by tourists.

Despite experiencing heavy traffic this evening there are no adverse effects to tourism transport infrastructure. Auckland Harbour Bridge has been open as normal together with ferry services from the city to the North Shore running on schedule. Auckland International airport remained operating normally all day.

Top 100 Things to Do in Australia before you die!

Swimming with whale sharks and having lunch with crocodiles have been voted among the 100 things you should do in Australia before you die.  The list, compiled by Australian Traveller, details a range of activities from the well-known to the quirky, adventurous and unique.

Unique and magical Aussie activities that made the list include visiting the Bay of Fires in Tasmania, marveling at Undara’s lava tube or being the first to watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean at Shark Bay in Western Australia.

Alternatively you could take part in the world’s only waterless regatta on the Todd River in Alice Springs or ride the world’s steepest railway in the Blue Mountains.

Get close to nature and march with 100 million red crabs, swim with dolphins, watch a parade of little penguins or take a Cable Beach camel ride in Broome.

Popular tourist activities that made the list include the Sydney Harbour BridgeClimb, exploring Canberra, shopping in Melbourne and cruising the Great Ocean Road in Victoria.

The list was compiled with the help of the travel and tourism industry who submitted nominations, which were then voted on by travel writers and the magazine’s readers.

There were more than 950 unique submissions to choose from.

Here is a list of the “Top 10”, but you will need to buy the book to find out the other 90!

10. WIND YOURSELF UP ALONG THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD
One of the nation’s most spectacular drives, the Great Ocean Road in built into steep seaside cliffs in Victoria. Spectacular sights along the way include the famous Twelve Apostles and various shipwrecks. It is also home to the most popular surf coast of Victoria, with its beaches often deserted.

9. CHASE A PURE DINGO DOWN FRASER ISLAND’S 75 MILE BEACH
Fraser Island’s famous 75 Mile Beach is the only place in the world where the rainforest grows on sand dunes at elevations of more than 200m. It is a bird watcher’s paradise, with 354 recorded species. It is also a 4WD heaven, with the vehicles allowed on the beach.

8. EXPLORE SYDNEY HARBOUR
There are many ways to experience all that Sydney Harbour has to offer - among the options include cruising it, eating on it, dancing on it, flying past it or viewing it from the zoo.  There are 28 kilometres of tracks around the Harbour, many through national parks and along beaches.  There are many historic sites around the Harbour including The Rocks and Old Sydney Town. Places to explore include two aquariums, Taronga Zoo, the Royal Botanic Gardens, the NSW Contemporary Art Museum and Darling Harbour.

7. SWIM WITH WHALE SHARKS AT NINGALOO
Australia’s largest fringe reef, Ningaloo Reef runs 260km along the length of the North West Cape, Western Australia.  The reef offers an experiences of a lifetime: From mid-March to mid-May every year visitors can dive with whale sharks.  The world’s largest species of fish, whale sharks reach more than 12 meters in length and weight over 11 tonnes.

6. CRUISE THE RUGGED KIMBERLEY COAST
One of the most spectacularly rugged coastlines in the world, the Kimberley is home to red cliffs and cascading waterfalls (including horizontal falls), tidal rivers with dense rainforests and mangroves.  The best way to see the coastline is by boat, as there are only a small number of 4WD tracks that become impassable during the wet season.

5. CLIMB THE COATHANGER
You haven’t seen Sydney until you climb the world famous Sydney Harbour Bridge.

4. VISIT THE REMARKABLE ROCK
A trip to Uluru and neighbouring Kata Tjuta represents one of the world’s most memorable walking holidays.  Travellers can walk around the huge rock - a 9.4km trip - which is possible the oldest walking track on the planet.  From a distance Uluru changes colour - from blue to violet of flowing red, and close-up it is a powerful and awe-inspiring sight.  The Olgas provide further excellent walking opportunities, and the night sky at Uluru, undimmed by the lights of civilization, is spectacular nearly every evening.

3. FIND FREEDOM ON THE BIG LAP
Experience true freedom by taking three to six months to drive around the nation, visiting wherever you choose.  The big decision is which way to go around Australia. One of Australian Traveller’s contributors claims that if you go anti-clockwise, the route is 900 kilometers shorter.  It’s best to avoid the wet season in the Kimberley (November to February) and avoid the cold weather in Tasmania during the winter.

2. DIVE INTO THE GREAT BARRIER REEF
The best way to explore one of Australia’s most spectacular locations is to dive right in - although you could also take a cruise or a scenic flight.  With over 1500 species of fish, 400 types of mollusc, 200 bird species as well as dugongs and green turtles, it is the single largest structure made out of living creatures on Earth and is truly mesmerizing.  The reef stretches more than 2300 kilometers along the northeastern coast of Australia from the northern tip of Queensland to just north of Bundaberg.

1. OVERLOAD YOUR SENSES IN KAKADU
With a reputation for overloading the senses, seeing Australia’s largest national park in the wet (December to March) and in the dry is a must.  At over 19,000 square kilometers, the park is home to 75 different reptile species, 26 types of bats, 10,000 types of insects and 2000 plant species.

Christchurch Update:  March 2, 2011

It has been just over a week since the 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch. To mark the moment the earthquake hit last Tuesday, New Zealand observed a 2 minute silence yesterday at 12:51pm to reflect and remember.

One week on there has been remarkable progress already in the initial damage assessment and recovery operation. As of yesterday NZ Civil Defence has confirmed that 12,250 properties in Christchurch (largely in the central city) have already been safety assessed. Of this total 1,445 have been deemed off limits (red) pending further assessment, possibly long term. 8,193 properties have been granted ‘green’ status meaning they are structurally safe. Many of the of the remainder were granted ‘yellow’ status meaning the building will be safe long term however requiring immediate repairs before ‘green’ status is granted. A number of hotels fit into all 3 categories, many are yet to be confirmed.

The 25-story Hotel Grand Chancellor is in the process of being braced and searched however news regarding planned demolition is still pending and very possible over the coming days.

It is incredibly important to note that although a large number of properties have been declared structurally safe by officials (many of whom may have advised you directly they are open for business already), Christchurch is still absolutely NOT in a position to accommodate guests in the short and possibly mid-term. Many of the 1,445 buildings (including Grand Chancellor) that have been declared off limits are in danger of collapse at any time. The city itself continues to experience regular after-shocks which threaten to cause further damage.

Rydges Christchurch has been declared structurally sound however will be closed for business until at least the next 4 months as they rectify internal cosmetic damage. Chateau on the Park has also been declared structurally sound however will be off sale pending repair until at least the next 4 months.

The city center itself also remains cordoned off form public access as New Zealand and International teams finalize search and rescue and forge on with the recovery plan.  Although many hotels have advised they are safe and open for business, our directive is to avoid travel to Christchurch for at least the next 8 weeks as the massive recovery operation continues. All Christchurch city hotels and tour services have been closed from sale until September 21, 2011 .

Presently until we understand the effects of the earthquake on all supplier partners this is difficult. The situation we are in is still a fluid one. As we receive more news we will keep you updated

The key message here is that although Christchurch is not open for business during recovery, the greater South Island is open, safe and ready for business. Christchurch airport remains fully operational.

For clients booked on a tour involving the South Island travel is actively encouraged. Christchurch airport can be used as a gateway for clients heading to the beautiful wine region of Marlborough, the rugged mountain and glacier regions of the West Coast and of course Queenstown, the Southern Lakes and Otago.

Hotel Grand Chancellor Christchurch on Verge of Collapse

Rescue personnel are being pulled back from the central city as the 26-story Hotel Grand Chancellor building is on the verge of collapse.

In the last 10 minutes it has moved about a metre horizontally and is now on a lean to the east.

Mayor Bob Parker said it was one of the tallest buildings in the city and if it collapsed posed a significant safety risk.

All emergency and search and rescue teams have been evacuated from a two-block radius around the Grand Chancellor, which is on Cashel St. One floor inside has already collapsed.  Fire Service national commander Mike Hall said emergency services had moved away from the Hotel Grand Chancellor half an hour ago on the advice of engineers who said it was on the brink of collapse.

He said rescuers would reassess their operations at the hotel in the coming hours if it did not collapse and aftershocks stopped.

The latest aftershock, a magnitude 4.2, came at 1.59pm and was centered 10km southeast of Christchurch at a depth of 5km.

Herald reporter Andrew Koubaridis saw the windows of a building on the corner of Montreal and Walker Sts bulge and part of its roof collapse as the aftershock hit.  Superintendent Dave Cliff this morning said there were 55 bodies in a temporary morgue and
20 more were being taken there.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said 300 people were also listed as missing.  “With those 300 missing people could just be someone called up saying so and so is missing -they may have just left town.”

Announcing a national state of emergency had been declared, Prime Minister John Key said the whole country was grieving.

Mr Key said the lives lost were the “greatest loss”. “Buildings are just buildings, roads are just roads, but lives are irreplaceable.” He said the whole of New Zealand was with Canterbury. “Today all New Zealand grieves for you Christchurch,” he said. But he said the city would recover.

“Though lost lives will never be replaced, and though your city will never look the same again, you will rebuild your city, you will rebuild your lives, you will overcome.”

Mr Key said he was “very nervous” about speculating about the eventual death toll but with 75 dead and hundreds missing it was likely to rise.

Hayman Temporary Closure - Cyclone Damage

We regret to advise that Hayman will be forced to suspend new and existing bookings for the period 6 March to 31 July 2011 in order to repair damage caused to the island by Tropical Cyclones Anthony and Yasi, which passed over Hayman on 30 January and 2 February 2011.

Whilst it was initially considered that the damage was largely aesthetic in nature, subsequent specialist assessments have identified that the rectification works required will result in significant guest impact and the closure of the resort for a period of time.

We are currently contacting our industry partners and guests and will be providing assistance and support wherever possible with alternative arrangements.

“The two devastating cyclones that swept through Queensland have unfortunately not spared us,” said Lloyd Donaldson, Head of Hotel Investments, Mulpha Australia and Managing Director, Hayman.

“The works will encompass key guest and accommodation areas, activity facilities, essential infrastructure, landscaping and grounds throughout the island,” Mr Donaldson said.

“This has been an extremely difficult decision for Mulpha Australia, particularly with its current and ongoing investment strategy for the island, however the works required and anticipated disruption to guests means we have no other choice.”

“We greatly appreciate the understanding of our guests, industry partners and the wider community with respect to the challenges caused by these two cyclones,” Mr Donaldson said.

“It is our intention to retain all staff throughout the period of closure and we are committed to completing the works speedily.  The resort will reopen on 1 August 2011.”

Update on Queensland Cyclone Yasi Property Damage

Further to the updates last week, Cyclone Yasi passed over the Queensland Coast late on Wednesday the 2nd of February. Unfortunately, some properties have sustained some damage and have had to close temporarily. Below is the advice we have received from each supplier. From the information we have received, all other suppliers in the affected areas are up and running and accepting bookings. We will continue to update you as we receive advice from suppliers, don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any
    queries.

Dunk Island and Bedarra Island Resorts
Hideaway Resorts, operator of Dunk and Bedarra Island Resorts, have had no choice but to close for the time being.  Communications with the islands remain a major issue, with power and landlines out, and intermittent mobile communication only, making it difficult to provide up to date information. Early on Wednesday, the cyclone started heading south west and increased to a possible category 5. At this point, those remaining were committed to stay, with no safe option to leave the islands. Staff were located in cyclone rated accommodation and all times remained there safely until the cyclone passed.  It is too early to say for how long the resorts will be need to be closed to undertake necessary clean up and repairs, with property assessments hampered by weather conditions and safety considerations, as well as the prioritization of the staff re-location.  Those with bookings made for travel prior to 31 August 2011 are being canceled (without penalty), with further updates to follow in this regard.

    The Elandra Mission Beach
The Elandra Mission Beach has suffered extensive damage from Cyclone Yasi. A minimum of 20 rooms have been damaged and the roof of the main building has been lifted off. At this stage the property will not be open for business for another 8 weeks while they work to rebuild.

Castaways Resort and Spa Mission Beach
Castaways Resort and Spa at Mission Beach was in the direct path of Cyclone Yasi. While the area of Mission Beach has been significantly impacted, the resort has come through remarkably unscathed with only superficial damage to the resort itself.
At this time our advice is that the resort is operating under generated power with all rooms back on line. The resort is currently full with media and emergency services personnel because it is operational. With priority needed to be given for emergency services, Castaways Resort and Spa is unable to fulfil reservations up to and including the 14th February 2011.

Castaways Resort and Spa will look forward to welcoming guests back to spectacular Mission Beach as soon as we are able.

    Daintree Eco Lodge and Spa
Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa and its lush rainforest valley, sustained no physical damage during Cyclone Yasi, however due to prolonged loss of electricity and services the Lodge & Spa is now not able to be open for business until 28th February 2011.
The electricity supply company has not confirmed when the supply will be restored as they are dealing with larger populated areas and essential services as first priorities.  Once power has been restored and all essential onsite infrastructure is fully operational,
management and staff will contact you with the announcement that Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa is re-opened.  We are sure you appreciate our unfortunate situation as a small Australian owned and operated business and we sincerely thank you for your patience and your support.

    Long Island Resort
In the wake of cyclone Yasi, Ocean Hotels and Tourism has taken a decision to temporarily close Long Island Resort until 31st March 2011. The resort will be fully operational and will reopen for trade on the 01st April 2011. Ocean Hotels and Tourism is taking the opportunity during this closure to address damage caused to the resort by cyclone Yasi and to complete the planned refurbishment of the resort’s restaurant which had been delayed due to recent events. The time frame mentioned will
provide the perfect opportunity to make sure all works are completed and the resort will be refreshed and ready to re-open its doors as of the 01st April 2011. Ocean Hotels and Tourism is committed to the tourism industry within Far North Queensland
and will continue to operate Club Crocodile Airlie Beach, Hides Hotel Cairns, Sunlover Reef Cruises and Ferntree Lodge-Cape Tribulation as normal.

    Update from Tjapukai, Cairns

Well as we are all very well aware Mother Nature has been playing havoc with most of Australia this summer and unfortunately Cyclone Yasi that hit our coast last week did not spare Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park. We have sustained considerable damage to our Dance Theatre, Cultural Village, Restaurant and the electrics within parts of the main building.

We therefore have to remain closed for both Tjapukai by Day and Tjapukai by Night until Tuesday, 15th February 2010, reopening both products on Wednesday, 16th February. We will provide you with an update of our status on Monday, 14th February.

We do sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused you or your customers, but please be assured that we have not made this decision to remain closed lightly. We do not want to put any of our staff or customers at risk until we are 100% sure that the entire park and the experiences that we are offering are safe and of a high standard.

For any agents that we are currently holding bookings for our reservations department will be in contact with you very soon to either cancel your bookings or make alternative arrangements.

    Lizard & Heron Island Update

Lizard Island has received minimal damage from Cyclone Yasi, which made landfall on the Far North Queensland coast overnight.

On Lizard Island, 240km north of Cairns and 27km off the coast of Cape Flattery, the tides have been higher than expected but all boats and structures have been secured, and there has been no major impact. Lizard Island has power and the only damage appears to be vegetation, such as fallen tree branches.
As a precautionary measure, and following advice from meteorological sources, guests were evacuated from Lizard Island on Tuesday 1st February. The team at Lizard Island who remained on the island are all safe and well.
Lizard Island is expected to re-open on Saturday 5th February.
Guests who were required to cut their stay short on Lizard Island will be able to take the remainder of their holiday at another time, without incurring fees.
On Heron Island, at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, 72km off the coast of Gladstone, there has been no damage, and the island is operating as normal and open for business.
Guests who have been affected regarding travel to Lizard Island are being asked to contact their travel provider or the Delaware North Australia Parks & Resorts reservations team on 1300 863 248.
Bookings for future travel on both Heron and Lizard Island are being accepted as per usual.

    Cyclone Yasi

As everyone is now aware, Cyclone Yasi crossed the Queensland coast near the townships of Tully and Mission Beach around midnight last night, causing extensive and severe damage to these two towns and the surrounding area including the towns of Innisfail and Cardwell.

Fortunately it did not have the terribly damaging impact on Cairns or Townsville that it would have had the system crossed the coast closer to either of these two cities and everyone is counting their blessings that there have not been any fatalities or serious injuries.

Around 175,000 homes remain without power in the north Queensland region and there is a massive clean up operation getting underway to get rid of the debris lying around the streets and on properties.

We have several hundred passengers still in the region with many more heading this way in the next two weeks.

So here is our most up to date summary of our understanding of conditions in relation to flights, hotels, island resorts, touring and roads

    FLIGHTS / AIRPORTS

Cairns Airport has re-opened this afternoon and we believe commercial flights will re-commence tomorrow although this has not been confirmed as yet. If not tomorrow they will certainly be operating on Saturday 5th February.

Airports in Townsville, Proserpine and Hamilton Island are open and we expect commercial flights will resume tomorrow (Friday 4th February).

CAIRNS / PALM COVE / PORT DOUGLAS

Information from Cairns indicates that most of the Hotels that closed and were evacuated yesterday will re-open either later today or tomorrow.

Hotels which did not close are now operating as normal.

Some hotels have indicted they will not re-open until Saturday given the extensive clean up they need to undertake around their grounds / pool areas etc. and we have sent out separate advice on a hotel by hotel basis.

Note that conditions on the ground are not pleasant anywhere along the north Queensland coast. It is very windy, it is pouring with rain and police have asked motorists to stay off the road and residents to remain indoors. Virtually all shops and restaurants are closed.

MISSION BEACH / DUNK ISLAND / BEDARRA ISLAND

We expect all properties at Mission Beach to remain closed until further notice. Some have serious structural damage, others a big mess to clean up and we will advise re-opening dates on a case by case basis as soon as we receive them.

Both Bedarra and Dunk Islands were evacuated earlier in the week and remain closed.  They have suffered extensive damage and at this stage they are not able to advise when they will re-open.

    TOWNSVILLE / MAGNETIC ISLAND

Townsville suffered damaging winds and some minor flooding however Hotels that did close due to the threat of flooding are re-opening today and tomorrow.

Magnetic Island was battered by heavy waves and winds however managed to come through pretty well and we are advised ferry services will re-commence tomorrow between Magnetic Island and Townsville and island resorts will be re-opening tomorrow and Saturday.

    LIZARD ISLAND

Lizard Island will re-open on Saturday with passenger flights from Cairns re-commencing as per schedule. Reports from the island indicate there has been no damage.

HAMILTON ISLAND / DAYDREAM ISLAND / HAYMAN ISLAND

Hamilton Island is open again for business today with commercial flights expected to resume tomorrow. Ferry services operated by Fantasea cruises to and from Shute Habour have re-commenced at 4.00pm Queensland time today.

Whitehaven Beach and Reef cruises will re-commence operations on Monday 7th February.

Both Daydream Island and Hayman Island re-open tomorrow with transfers from Hamilton Island and Shute Harbour as per schedule.

    GREEN ISLAND

At this stage we understand Green Island will re-open on Saturday or Sunday although this has not been confirmed as yet..

    FITZROY ISLAND

Fitzroy Island will re-open on Saturday 5th February.

    HERON ISLAND

As per previous advice, Heron remains open and it is business as usual with flights and boat transfers operating as per schedule.

    DAY TOURING

Most day tour operators are not contactable due to a loss of power in Cairns at present. We do not expect any tours to operate tomorrow or Saturday depending on the resumption of power services and the clearing of roads.

We anticipate most day tour operators will be able to re-commence operation on Sunday 6th February or Monday 7th February and we will advise further tomorrow.

    ROAD CLOSURES

At present roads to Kuranda and the Atherton Tablelands are although motorists can use the Rex Highway between Mareeba / Mt Molloy / Julatten and Port Douglas to get to and from this region.

The Bruce Highway south of Cairns is closed between Mourilyan and Tully and on further sections between Cairns and Townsville.

The Captain Cook Highway between Cairns, Palm Cove and Port Douglas is open.

Down Under Tours Operations | Cyclone Update #2

We wish to advise that we are in full preparation for shutdown of our Operation, due to the imminent arrival of Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi. Please see the below links for more details.

    http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDQ65002.shtml
    http://www.goes.noaa.gov/sohemi/sohemiloops/shirgmscol.html
Because of the severity and size of this storm, Down Under Tours Cairns operation will be closed from 7pm tonight, 1st February, until further notice. We are expecting a 3 metre storm surge in conjunction with the storm, which means that our Head Office will go underwater if this happens. As all of our servers and crucial computer equipment would be affected, we have no option but to disconnect and move to higher ground. This means ALL communication (i.e. e-mail, phone, fax) will not be possible. The same applies to moving our fleet - we will be moving all vehicles to higher ground tonight.

    CAIRNS FIT:
ALL day tours are suspended from 2nd February until further notice. We will be printing off all manifests for the next 7 days and will be endeavoring to contact all passengers however, we do request your assistance please. As we will have to shut down our Cairns operation in its entirety from 7pm tonight, if you can communicate with your clients wherever possible, it would be greatly appreciated.
    CAIRNS CHARTER:
At this stage, the Cairns Airport is still open. Advice at the time of writing this e-mail is they are hoping to leave the Airport open for as long as possible (until 10am tomorrow morning). This could change with no notice. For any of you with charter groups expecting to depart, we will be in communication with your groups today to discuss a contingency plan for tomorrow morning. THESE WILL BE THE ONLY POSSIBLE CHARTER MOVEMENTS TOMORROW AND ARE SUBJECT TO THE AIRPORT CLOSURE. Once again, we would appreciate your assistance wherever possible, after 7pm tonight, as we will not be contactable. If you can communicate with your groups, please do.
    ALICE SPRINGS - CENTRAL AUSTRALIA:
Our Alice Springs operation will continue to operate as normal. However, as all electronic communication with Alice Springs is done through the Cairns server, THE ONLY WAY TO COMMUNICATE WITH OUR ALICE SPRINGS OFFICE WILL BE VIA TELEPHONE (08) 8950 6500 OR FAX (08) 8953 4243. They will not be able to receive any communication whatsoever via e-mail until further notice.

    Adventure Tours Australia Cyclone Warning

With Cyclone Yasi quickly setting course for the east coast of Queensland, the Adventure Tours Australia Group is taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of its passengers.

Oz Experience is suspending its service between Cairns and Airlie Beach from 6pm tonight, and does not expect to resume them for at least 24 hours, depending on the cyclone’s movements.  Three Adventure Tours Australia Suncatcher tours have been affected and these will be relocated to Cairns.

“Cairns is the nearest large center with good infrastructure, so our passengers will be safest there if a category 4 or 5 cyclone were to hit,” ATAG East Coast Business Manager Steve Wieczorek says.

“Our Sydney operations staff are monitoring the situation constantly and we will make our decisions on safety first.”

    Brisbane Getting Back to Business

It is with great pride that we acknowledge that just weeks after the challenge of the recent flood, Brisbane’s residents and business community are getting on with the job of recovery and rebuilding at a rapid pace with the collective goal of getting ‘back to business’. Most of the state’s tourism operators are unaffected by the floods and have the welcome mat rolled out and ready to welcome visitors.

Brisbane is looking fantastic and ready for visitors.  Brisbane Marketing is strongly committed to communicating that Brisbane is getting back to business and we still need your business for Brisbane and Queensland to recover. While many people may not have been able to help with the flood clean up phase, please let them know they can still help Queenslanders by not canceling any Queensland holidays they have already booked, or if they don’t have one booked, book one today.

If anyone is concerned about an existing booking please check with the accommodation or tour provider for the latest update before considering changing plans. As you will see from our update most have not been directly affected by the flood waters.

BRISBANE REMAINS A HEALTHY PLACE TO VISIT

There are no health and safety issues in Brisbane as a result of the floods. The flood waters have receded and there is no increased risk of infectious diseases.  The city’s drinking water supply has not been affected by the flood. Brisbane is well and truly open and ready to accommodate visitors, and travelers should remain confident that Brisbane remains a safe and clean city.

    Australia Flood Updates

Flood waters continue to move across Australia. However the water in Brisbane is to receding and the clean-up is in full swing. While Victoria is experiencing some flooding, little to no rain is expected for the coming days, which will bring welcome relief. The major Tourist areas of Victoria and Queensland are
not affected, and are open for business.

Qantas to Launch Services from Dalls Fort Worth from Sydney

Qantas today announced it will launch direct services from Sydney to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport from May 16, 2011, giving Australians unprecedented access to destinations across the USA.

Qantas will launch flights from Sydney to Dallas Fort Worth this May, with the return leg routing via Brisbane. But the airline will drop existing flights from Sydney to San Francisco.

The four times-weekly service (departing Sydney on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) will commence on May 16, using Boeing 747-400 aircraft. The outbound leg will operate directly from Sydney to Dallas, while the inbound leg will route via Brisbane.

Interestingly Qantas says that the flight is being sold as a three-class offering (as opposed to the usual four-class economy, premium economy, business and first class offering). According to a regular poster on our forum the carrier will be running the service in a similar way to a temporary move in 2009/2010, where sales of first class were suspended on the London-Hong Kong route, with its most loyal passengers offered first class seating (albeit without the food and service) at business class prices – see online news May 21, 2009.

As a result of the new Dallas service, Qantas’ route between Sydney and San Francisco will be dropped on May 14. The carrier will also expand its commercial relationship with fellow Oneworld member American Airlines, whose primary hub is at Dallas Fort Worth.

Subject to regulatory approval Qantas will codeshare with AA on 13 new US and three new Mexican destinations, bringing the total number of Qantas-AA codeshares to 51 destinations in the US, Mexico and Canada. Qantas says that the expanded co-operation will also “provide a joint platform for the airlines to increase Dallas Fortworth services to a daily frequency”.

    Update on Queensland Flooding

As I’m sure you’re seeing in the international media, flooding continues around Australia. The worst has apparently passed now in Queensland, with waters in Brisbane and surrounds receding. Next the major clean-up will begin.

The weather which has caused the floods in Queensland has also now moved into New South Wales, mostly near the Queensland border causing flooding around the Grafton area.Western Victoria has also been hit by flash flooding, notably on the Great Ocean Road near Lorne, The Grampians and around Ballarat.

We continue to monitor the situation, and are available to assist your clients to amend their bookings.

Australia is still open for business – the Gold & Sunshine Coasts, close to Brisbane, and further north into the Whitsundays and Tropical North – are ready to welcome your passengers, as is the rest of the country.

Our thoughts are with those affected in Queensland, New South Wales & Victoria at this time.

    Brisbane Flood Update

Greetings from Brisbane. In relation to the current flood crisis in Brisbane I want to update you on the current situation as at 1.30pm local time here.

As you are no doubt aware, the situation in Brisbane is very serious with the Brisbane River expected to cause significant flooding in the CBD and suburban areas during this afternoon and tomorrow afternoons king tides
. Some roads are already closed in suburban Brisbane and no doubt many more will later today. People in flood prone areas are being evacuated to temporary shelters.

As we look out the window of the office,  I can see the Brisbane River running strongly with a lot of debris and we very strongly recommend that anyone with non-essential travel to Brisbane defer that travel to later next week or make alternative plans. Power cuts are expected in the CBD area over the next 48 hours. All hotels in Brisbane are offering refunds for cancellations between now and Saturday night and a number of hotels which are in flood prone areas or may be cut off in the rising waters. Some have already closed including the Sebel Suites in Edward Street.

Brisbane Airport (BNE) is open and functioning normally and there is road access from Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast however Queensland police are advising that only essential road travel should be undertaken in and around Brisbane at present. Bus services ceased at 1.00pm and trains are operating on a very limited timetable.

We do not recommend that anyone comes to Brisbane for at least the next seven days or that anyone flies into Brisbane to try and access the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast. Access to the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast should only be undertaken via Maroochydore Airport or Gold Coast Airport.

Oz Experiences Closes Service Until Floods Ease

Australia’s leading hop-on, hop-off bus touring service Oz Experience has suspended its Queensland services from Sydney to Airlie Beach due to the devastating floods.

“With the Brisbane River set to go critical, we have closed down all services between these destinations to ensure our passengers’ safety,” Operations Director, Vicki Beard said.

Oz Experience has people on the ground in Queensland and in our Sydney office working around the clock, to look after the needs of passengers and assist the local communities.

“We’re monitoring the situation on an hourly basis to ensure fast response. We hope to resume services as quickly as possible but it’s unlikely this will happen before Monday 17 January.”

Oz Experience has helped its passengers find safe accommodation, get to airports or continue their travel in non-affected regions.

Oz Experience urges existing passengers to avoid travelling to any of the areas affected by flood or in danger of flooding. For those already travelling, we recommend avoiding Byron Bay as accommodation is scarce.
Some affected passengers are eligible to receive a credit for their pass, which they can then use in another region, or have their pass extended at no cost.

Please contact Oz Experience for details.

Oz Experience will provide daily service updates on http://www.ozexperience.com.au/queensland-flood-updates/.

Adventure Tours Australia Group has organised a collection among staff to donate to the Queensland Government’s Flood Appeal and the company urges others to give what they can at http://www.qld.gov.au/floods.
“Our thoughts are with the people suffering from this devastating natural disaster and we encourage everyone to donate what they can.”

Qantas Prepares to Resume A380 Services on US Routes

SYDNEY, 11 January 2011: Qantas today announced it would resume A380 services between Australia and Los Angeles, commencing with QF93 from Melbourne to Los Angeles on 16 January.

The move follows the grounding of the A380 fleet and continued suspension of A380 flights on the Los Angeles-Australia routes that regularly require the use of maximum engine thrust. In line with the airline’s safety-first approach, the suspension of the Los Angeles-Australia routes was implemented to enable Qantas to monitor the performance of the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine.  After extensive engineering analysis and close consultation with Rolls-Royce, Airbus and the European and Australian regulators, Qantas, Rolls-Royce and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority are now satisfied that it is appropriate for Qantas to resume A380 flying on the Los Angeles-Australia routes.

Qantas Chief Executive Officer, Mr Alan Joyce, said the decision would see Qantas continue the progressive reintroduction of A380s to its network.  “As always, safety has been our first priority in assessing when and where to bring A380s back into
service over the past month,” Mr Joyce said. “Only when we, our manufacturers and our regulators were completely satisfied that it was safe to begin flying the aircraft again did we resume A380 services, initially on London routes only.”

The decision not to operate Los Angeles services allowed us to gain further operational experience before deploying the A380 on these routes.  “In close consultation with Rolls-Royce, we are now confident that we can begin flying the A380 to
and from Los Angeles without any conditions on the use of maximum engine thrust. In the meantime, our A380 engine inspection process continues as we gradually restore the aircraft to our international network. We are operating a full international and domestic schedule, using our entire range of aircraft.”

For the remainder of January, Qantas will operate 14 A380 services per week, on the following routes:

QF9/10 (Melbourne-Singapore-London): three services per week.
QF11/12 (Sydney-Los Angeles): four services per week.
    QF31/32 (Sydney-Singapore-London): daily.

From February onwards, A380 frequencies on London and Los Angeles routes will be steadily increased as aircraft return to service and new deliveries join the fleet.

Qantas continues to offer 34 return services to Los Angeles each week, on the following schedule:
    QF11/12, QF107/108 (Sydney-Los Angeles): twice daily.
    QF93/94 (Melbourne-Los Angeles): daily.
QF15/16 (Brisbane-Los Angeles): six per week.
    QF25/26 (Melbourne-Auckland-Los Angeles): daily.

Queensland Rail Services Disrupted due to Flooding

As the rain keeps falling and the flooding crisis in central Queensland continues, our teams are still working around the clock to reopen affected lines as quickly and safely as possible.

Many of our long distance services have been disrupted or canceled due to extensive flooding north of Bundaberg.

While the situation is constantly changing, at present:

The Sunlander and Cairns Tilt Train services between Brisbane and Cairns have been canceled up to and including Sunday 16 January 2011. Special daylight rail shuttle services between Cairns and Mackay have been extended to Sunday 16 January 2011 in order to help customers resume their holidays or return home after flood-related disruptions.

The Rockhampton Tilt Train services will operate between Brisbane and Gladstone and vice versa only. Unfortunately due to continued flooding affecting the road north of Gladstone, Queensland Rail is unable to provide alternative transport for customers wishing to travel on between Rockhampton and Gladstone.

The Bundaberg Tilt Train services remain unaffected.

Spirit of the Outback services to Longreach have been canceled until further notice. Services are still operating between Brisbane and Gladstone.

The Westlander services between Brisbane and Charleville may be disrupted due to possible flooding in the southeast, particularly in Dalby.

    The Inlander services remain unaffected.

Queensland Rail apologizes for the inconvenience caused to you and your customers due to the service adjustments and cancellations.
