ITINERARY

From Adelaide to Melbourne (or vice versa) this is Australia’s most spectacular drive. Diverse and scenic, every day on the Road is rich and rewarding. Self drive package includes rental car with unlimited mileage and taxes, accommodation, as well as a comprehensive ‘Co-pilot’ handbook and maps for the regions visited.

DAY 1 Adelaide to the Barossa Valley (40 miles)
Leave Adelaide and head north towards the beautiful Barossa Valley one of Australia’s most famous wine producing areas. On the way you will pass many wineries. To truly discover the secrets that the Barossa Valley has to offer, drop in for a tasting. The Barossa produces brandy, dry and sweet table wines, and fortified styles of wine. Some of the most famous wineries of the Barossa are Yalumba, Orlando, Penfolds and Seppelts, names with which you’ll already be familiar.

DAY 2 The Barossa Valley to Robe (222 miles)
Leaving the Barossa Valley today, travel through the towns of Angaston, Mt Pleasant and Mannum, one of the oldest towns located on the Murray River with an historic and lively past. Traveling through the towns of Murray Bridge and Tailem Bend, along the Coorong National Park skirting Lake Alexandria and Lake Albert. From Kingston, continue on the Southern Ports Highway to Robe, a small town nestled on the edge of Guichen Bay.

DAY 3 Robe to Port Fairy
A choice of routes is available. (189 miles direct)
The shorter route will take you via Millicent and on to Mount Gambier and then along the coast to Portland and Port Fairy. Port Fairy is a quaint fishing village and hosts of the annual Port Fairy Folk Festival. Many of the limestone and bluestone buildings in the town date back to the 1840’s and have been classified by the National Trust.

OR (333 miles via The Grampians)
The longer route requires a very early start. From Robe travel to Mt Gambier and then through the towns of Hamilton, Coleraine and Casterton and on to Dunkeld. From Dunkeld a scenic drive will take you through the Grampians National Park to Halls Gap. Travel via Penhurst to reach Port Fairy. Port Fairy is a quaint fishing village and hosts of the annual Port Fairy Folk Festival. Many of the limestone and bluestone buildings in the town date back to the 1840’s and have been classified by the National Trust.

DAY 4 Port Fairy to Lorne (189 miles)
This morning depart Port Fairy and drive towards Warrnambool, a major town that was once a whaling center. Continuing along the “Shipwreck Coast” you will come across “London Bridge” the broken arch, before reaching Port Campbell, a quaint little seaside town. Traveling past Port Campbell you will first come to Loch Ard Gorge and then, a short distance on, the Twelve Apostles which are huge stone pillars sticking out of the surf, carved over time by the ways of the sea. After Cape Otway rejoin the coastline and the unmatched scenery which is the Great Ocean Road. From Apollo Bay to Lorne this stretch of road has been described as one of the most beautiful and breathtaking drives in the world.

DAY 5 Lorne to Melbourne (179 miles)
From Lorne follow the coast road through Anglesea to the picturesque town of Torquay, recognised as the surfing capital of Australia. After Torquay you will skirt the western edge of Port Phillip Bay which will bring you to Geelong, the largest provincial city in Victoria. There is a choice of routes to take from Geelong to Melbourne. The first option is to travel North East from Geelong directly to Melbourne. The second is to take the Midland Highway from Geelong and travel north to Ballarat. This historical town was alive in the gold rush days of the 1850s. A most popular and exciting attraction is Sovereign Hill. From Ballarat travel South East to Melbourne.
