Matangi Island is a privately owned tropical island situated among the beautiful northern islands of Fiji in the South Pacific.
Matangi Island is one of the most beautiful islands in Fiji and certainly the most unique resort islands in the world. The island is just a short plane flight from Fiji’s International Airport, yet seemingly feels like another world away. Matangi is home to one of Fiji’s premier tropical island beach resorts, and is the epitome of a South Pacific island paradise. The only thing on Matangi Island is Matangi Island Resort, one of the top small luxury hotels of the world.
When you arrive, you will scarcely notice Matangi’s beach resort hidden among the many trees and gardens along the white sand beach. The Resort has only 14 individual bures (Fijian style bungalows), each oceanfront, scattered alongside the beach. All accommodations are handcrafted to traditional design, using local timbers, bamboo and coconut palm thatch to blend into the tropical environment and harmonize with the climate. There is a central resort area, where Matangi’s dining bure and activities center are nestled within the tropical foliage. From each bure, it is a short walk to the beach, dining or activities center, but far enough from each other to provide the privacy you desire.
Dramatic cliffs rise behind the beach resort, offering a wonderful vantage point to view the beautiful South Pacific island getaway and its neighboring islands, Qamea, Laucala, and in the distance, Taveuni Island. Romantic Horseshoe Bay is one of the highlights of this beautiful island, offering an unspoiled tropical wilderness, pristine white sand beaches, crystal clear aquamarine waters and a romantic honeymoon getaway. Wild orchids, frangipani, hibiscus, ginger plants, palm trees, Pacific Almond trees and an enormous variety of plant life fill the lush tropical gardens surrounding the guest bures at Matangi Island Resort.
Matangi’s Chefs will offer you a variety of cuisine from traditional Fijian fare, to European, American and Pacific Rim favorites, and will happily cater to special dietary needs. All meals are included and are served from the resort’s dining bure with its large wooden deck sitting right over the water. Alternatively you can arrange a private dinner under the stars on the beach. Room service is also available during normal meal times. Matangi’s meals include an array of fresh fish and seafood caught by local fishermen, imported meats, green salads, locally grown fresh vegetables, tropical fruit from the gardens, freshly baked bread and sumptuous desserts. A large selection of world class Australian and New Zealand wines and champagnes are available to accompany any of the fine meals. The rhythmic beating of the lali (traditional wooden drum) will announce the commencement of all meals.
